Microencapsulation
Multifunctional microcapsules are composite droplets with a diameter ranging from tens of nanometers to several micrometers, formed by encapsulating cells, imaging agents or therapeutics in a biodegradable core-shell structure. These microcapsules play a crucial role in many applications, such as targeted therapy, sustained drug release, and regenerative medicine. Surface-modified multifunctional microcapsules have demonstrated the enhanced biocompatibility and the prolonged shelf-life, enabling many innovative biomedical applications, such as image-guided delivery of oxygen and therapeutics to the targeted tissue site, acute release of reagents by external stimuli, and sustained release of therapeutics for improved bioavailability.
